Source sintered bearing bar stock from PM Distributors for small-quantity replacement parts in Australia—send us your dimensions.

Sintered bearing bar stock can provide a practical starting point when maintenance teams need a non-standard bearing size in a small quantity. Instead of committing immediately to a custom production run, solid or hollow stock may be machined to suit documented replacement dimensions.

What Is Sintered Bearing Bar Stock?

PM Distributors supplies sintered bearing products and states that customers needing non-standard sizes in small quantities can order solid or hollow bar stock ready for machining. The finished component still needs to be designed and machined for its intended shaft, housing and operating conditions.

Bar stock is not a universal substitute for every bearing. Suitability depends on material grade, lubrication, load, speed, temperature, tolerances and environmental exposure.

When Can Bar Stock Support a Repair?

Maintenance and engineering teams may consider bar stock when:

The original size is unavailable: An obsolete or uncommon bearing cannot be sourced in the required dimensions.

Only a small quantity is required: The demand does not justify tooling for a longer custom manufacturing run.

Final machining is available: A competent machine shop can produce the required bore, outside diameter, length and finish.

Specifications can be confirmed: The existing component or drawing provides enough information for an engineering assessment.

Operating conditions are understood: Load, speed, alignment, lubrication and temperature are documented before material selection.

Our article on sintered oil-impregnated bearings explains how the porous structure can retain lubricant. Machining allowances and finishing methods must account for the selected material and intended bearing behaviour.

What Information Should Buyers Provide?

A useful enquiry should contain more than a part description. To reduce specification errors, provide:

Required dimensions: Bore, outside diameter, finished length and allowable tolerances.

Application details: Shaft movement, load direction, duty cycle and operating speed.

Environment: Temperature, moisture, dust, contaminants or corrosive exposure.

Lubrication needs: Existing lubrication method and maintenance access.

Quantity and timing: Immediate replacement demand and possible future volume.

Technical decisions should be reviewed by an appropriately qualified person. Engineers Australia’s mechanical engineering practice guidance provides broader context on professional mechanical engineering responsibilities.

When Is a Custom Component More Appropriate?

Bar stock may suit prototypes, repairs and limited quantities. Longer production runs or complex geometries may be better assessed as custom sintered components. PM Distributors also supplies bearings and custom-made sintered parts in a range of shapes and sizes.

Our comparison of bronze bushings and plastic bearings under heavy loads shows why material choice must follow the application rather than a generic preference.

Get to know the applications of sintered solid bars in modern engineering projects in Australia. Available at PM Distributors, elevate your projects today!

Sintered solid bars are transforming modern engineering, offering precision, strength, and durability across projects in the automotive, aerospace, and energy sectors. With customisable properties and efficient material use, these components support cutting-edge applications, from wear-resistant gears to corrosion-resistant oil valves.

How Sintered Solid Bars Are Made?

Sintered solid bars are created through a process called powder metallurgy, which involves compressing and heating powdered metal to form a dense, solid structure. This method is commonly used to produce parts with high precision and strong mechanical properties.

Here’s a breakdown of the steps involved in making sintered solid bars:

• Preparation: This step involves creating metal powders through atomisation, which sprays molten metal to form fine particles. The powder can be a single metal or a combination, enabling custom alloys. Screening and mixing are then done to ensure consistent particle size and composition.

• Compacting: During this step, the powder is placed and pressed in a die under high pressure to form a “green compact” with the desired shape. This step binds the powder particles.

• Sintering: Sintering is done to heat the compacted powder metal in a controlled atmosphere furnace to just below the melting point of the primary metal. It allows particles to bond at a molecular level, increasing density and mechanical strength. The result is a solid, fused structure.

• Optional Secondary Processes: Re-pressing, machining, or surface treatments can be done to further enhance the properties of the sintered product. Additional heat treatments like annealing can then strengthen the material or relieve internal stresses.

• Quality Control: Quality control checks the finished bars for density, structural integrity, and dimensional accuracy. Surface finishes can also be applied to meet quality standards.

Sintered Solid Bars in Modern Engineering

Sintered solid bars, renowned for their exceptional durability, precision, and versatility, have become highly significant in modern engineering. Their unique manufacturing process ensures controlled porosity, precise alloy composition, and enhanced mechanical properties, making them an ideal choice for high-performance applications.

Here are some notable examples of how sintered solid bars are utilised in modern engineering projects:

• Automotive Components: Sintered bars find applications in various automotive components, including gears, bearings, and bushings. These components are designed to withstand the demanding wear and tear of engines and transmissions.

• Aerospace Applications: In the aerospace field, sintered bars help in producing lightweight yet durable parts for aircraft and spacecraft. By utilising sintered materials, engineers can achieve fuel efficiency without compromising on strength, contributing to the overall performance and sustainability of these advanced systems.

• Industrial Machinery: Sintered bars are integral to industrial machinery, particularly in high-pressure pumps and compressors. Their strength, durability, and exceptional wear resistance can ensure optimal performance and minimise downtime.

• Oil and Gas Industry: Sintered bars can also be useful in the oil and gas industry, particularly in drilling components. Their strength and exceptional wear resistance enable them to handle the abrasive environments encountered during oil and gas extraction.

• Construction and Heavy Equipment: Sintered bars are widely used in hydraulic components, such as cylinders, valves, and pumps. They offer durability under high-pressure and high-stress conditions, making them reliable in various heavy-duty applications.

Hollow bars can be produced in two ways. The first way to process hollow bars is to send a drill through a solid bar material. This process can be effective in maintaining accurate part dimensions, which can be very useful for critical applications. Another process in creating hollow bars is centrifugal casting. During this process, the molten material is spun and forced to enter the mould wall until it cools and hardens. With centrifugal casted hollow bars, they are expected to be dense and uniform in structure.

These types of bars can be created out of various materials. However, materials that are hard and strong can be difficult to process just to achieve perfect hollow bars.

Hollow Bars Main Advantages

One great thing about hollow bars is that they can reduce material losses. They can also help in reducing the need to process the operation of equipment for the deep drilling process. And since hollow bars are made from materials that can last for a long time and provide high cutting speed, then they are expected to maintain defect-free surfaces after being exposed to machining operations.

With the right set of materials, hollow bars can work in different environments due to their adequate corrosion protection. Even varying installation methods can be done to hollow bars, as long as they are made from durable and long-lasting materials. Additionally, hollow bars often possess very tight dimensional tolerances, allowing them to work optimally without expecting any failure.

Applications of Hollow Bars

A lot of industries today maximise hollow bars in a wide array of applications. Some industries that use hollow bars are automotive, chemical, food, general machining, paper and paperboard, shipbuilding, and textile. These industries effectively use hollow bars in generating radially machined components. They are likewise used to produce valves, actuators, pumps, compressors, axles, shafts, mechanical gaskets, connection components, and measuring instruments.

One type of bearing that is used by a wide variety of industries today is known as a bushing. Bushings are maximised to reduce friction and wear between two surfaces that slide against each other. They are found inside a given hole and often used as a casing for a shaft, pin, or hinge. Machines and equipment that have rotating or sliding shafts often need bushings to improve overall efficiency and reduce vibration, noise, and wear.

Bronze bushings are common nowadays as they can effectively resist shock, impact, wear, and corrosion. These bushings can also be used at high temperatures without getting damaged. Bronze, as a material, can be easily machined, brazed, and soldered, allowing it to be moulded into high-quality bushings. To date, two types of bronze bushings can be used in the industry. These two types are cast bronze bushings and oil impregnated bronze bushings.

Cast Bronze Bushings

Cast bronze bushings are made from a solid or hollow bronze alloy bar stock that undergoes different processes to attain the final shape. This specific bronze alloy is created by continuous or centrifugal casting, which generates a metal with a fine grain structure and strong mechanical properties. The bronze alloy bar stock is then machined through a computer numerical control (CNC) lathe that cuts the cast bar, removes additional bar stock, and processes the finished bushing.

All the processes involved in making cast bronze bushings do not involve any powder, which makes them attain a finer grain structure and greater structural strength. Cast bronze bushings are known to be much stronger, more durable, and more resistant against compressive forces. These features make cast bronze bushings recommended for applications with heavy loads.

One thing to consider, though, is that cast bronze bushings are generally more expensive than others since the whole process of making them can be slow. They also require additional lubrication.

Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushings

Oil impregnated bronze bushings, alternatively, are made by feeding the bronze powder into a die set that is set according to the bushing size. Afterward, the powder particles are pressed tightly together. The bonded powder particles are then placed in a furnace, with its temperature set high enough to effectively join the particles without melting them. The sintering process of metal particles helps them decrease porosity. As for oil impregnated bronze bushings, the final porosity is set at around 25%.

Once the final porosity is maintained, the bronze bushings are then pressed through a set of tools that will provide them the required tolerances. They are ultimately vacuum impregnated that forces oil to their interconnected porosity. Given these processes, oil impregnated bronze bushings can be advantageous due to their lower scrap loss. Manufacturing them at high volumes is also more feasible compared to cast bronze bushings. Also, these bronze bushings do not require any more additional lubrication.
